Montana's "Regional Communities"
and Associated Subregional Economics

READ City-Centered, Multi-County, Sub-State Regions as “Regional Communities”
Sub-state entities referred to as “READ regions” are not simply collections of counties centered around major population centers. They also can be thought of as “regionally-based communities.” Local economies tend to be regionally based and local economies are essentially relations between people carrying out a wide range of economic activities and functions. This large and overlapping set of relations can be thought of as constituting a community of sorts, a regional community. Important aspects of these regional communities have been mapped and analyzed for three READ sub-state regions in Montana. Similar maps can be constructed for any sub- state region. What’s more, it will be possible to considerably expand this type of mapping when area information and data from the 2000 Population Census is available.
